Behind the Scenes and Tours

Encounter wildlife like you never have before! Each tour is a unique peek behind the scenes to meet some of your favorite animals. Proceeds from the tours go towards the Little Rock Zoo Conservation Fund, which helps conservation efforts at the zoo and around the world!

Each Tour Includes:

  • Exclusive 30- to 45-minute experience backstage with seasoned zookeepers.
  • Opportunities to get closer to animals than you can on exhibit, possible opportunities for some touching and feeding in select encounters.
  • Tour of staff only areas.
  • Opportunities to learn about the Zoo’s conservation work and how guests can support conservation at home.
  • Souvenir photo (digital).

Admission is not included and must be purchased separately, non-members participating in a Behind the Scenes Encounter get ½ off admission.

Available Tours:

African Penguin Tour:

Join an experienced animal keeper at Laura P. Nichols Penguin Pointe to learn about African penguin biology, husbandry and the zoo’s role in conserving these endangered warm weather penguins. Includes a tour of holding areas and nest box room plus a close-up experience with one of our education penguins. No access inside the exhibit.

This area is wheelchair accessible. Closed-toe shoes are required for this tour.

African Penguin Tours are available every Sunday at 2:30 pm.

Regular: $39.00 per participant

Member: $33.00 per participant

Participants must be at least 6 years old; children between ages 6 and 17 must be accompanied by an adult (18+). There is a minimum of two people required to book and at least one of those people must be an adult.

This tour area has a capacity of 6.

Asian Elephant Tour:

Join the Little Rock Zoo's elephant team in the elephant barn for an opportunity to wash, feed, and take a photo with an elephant. Learn about how the Zoo supports elephant conservation efforts and learn how you can help. Also, get a personalized painting courtesy of one of our resident elephant artists!

This area is wheelchair accessible. Closed-toe shoes are required for this tour.

Asian Elephant Tours are available every Tuesday at 1:30 pm.

Regular: $59.00 per participant

Member: $49.00 per participant

This tour area has a capacity of 6.

Know before you book:

Tours need to be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance due to various animal considerations and availability. All participants must be registered to be on the tour.

Most tours are available year-round and in all weather conditions.

Payment must be received at least 5 business days after notification of tour approval.

The Little Rock Zoo reserves the right to cancel any tour due to unforeseen circumstances. The Zoo will contact you to reschedule your tour or provide a full refund.

All tours are walking tours. No transportation provided.

Please note, some tours take place in temperature controlled environments, or outside - please dress accordingly.

Tours are not guaranteed to be private, unless your group fills the maximum capacity.

Due to the unpredictability of animals, tour experiences may vary.

All participants should be aware of Zoo services and policies and must abide by staff instructions at all times.

For the safety of our animals, staff and tour guests- photos and/or videos are not permitted in all behind-the-scenes areas. Your animal care staff will identify areas during the tour where photos and/or video are allowed.

Please note that while all of our public spaces and visitor amenities are fully accessible, some of the behind-the-scenes areas visited through our tour program may not be.

Please notify Zoo Staff prior to booking if there is any physical, cognitive or behavioral needs within your group so our staff can be prepared to make any reasonable accommodations.

We thank you in advance for understanding that in compliance with best practices for zoo animal welfare as well as quarantine protocols outlined by federal regulations and the Association of Zoo and Aquarium accreditation standards, service animals are not permitted in our behind-the-scenes animal areas.

Evening and Overnight Programs

Zoo Snoozes:

When the Zoo gates close at the end of the day, your adventure is just beginning!  You and your group will get to get up close with some of our ambassador animals, go on a guided moonlight safari (weather permitting), and participate in fun games and activities.

All participants sleep in indoor, climate-controlled areas (unless otherwise noted) with restroom facilities, but no showers. A late-night snack and a light continental breakfast are served.

Twilight Hikes:

Can't spend the whole night at the Zoo?  Register for a Twilight Hike! You and your group will get to experience all the fun of a Zoo Snooze, meeting some of our ambassador animals, going on a guided moonlight safari (weather permitting), and participating in fun games and activities, all without worrying about your sleeping bags!
