World Rhino Day 2024

Dates: 9/22/2024
Price: Included with Admission

Rhinos are keystone species that play a crucial role in shaping and maintaining their ecosystems. By consuming vegetation, creating water holes, spreading nutrients, and clearing paths, they act as ecosystem engineers, essential to biodiversity and ecological balance. Protecting rhinos helps preserve entire landscapes.

Visit the Zoo on Sunday, September 22nd, to meet our rhinos, Andazi and Kevin, and learn more about their important role in the wild. The event is included with regular admission.

Schedule of Events:
Sunday, September 22, 2024
10:00-12:00: Awareness table at rhino exhibit, habitat exploration station, and hands-on activities
1:30: Keeper chat at the rhino exhibit

And don't miss this great opportunity to discover our latest exhibit - DRAGON KINGDOM!

Here’s how you can get involved with rhino conservation:
1. Habitat Preservation: The primary threat to rhinos is habitat loss due to deforestation and human encroachment. Support conservation initiatives focused on preserving and restoring their natural habitats, ensuring they have sufficient space to thrive. Little Rock Zoo partners with the International Rhino Foundation, dedicated to on-the-ground conservation programs in Africa and Asia, where rhinos are found.
2. Support Conservation Organizations: Contribute to reputable conservation organizations dedicated to rhino conservation. Your support can fund research, habitat protection, and community programs essential for the survival of rhinos. By visiting the Zoo, you’re already doing this! A portion of your admission and parking fee is dedicated to conservation groups that we are partnered with.
3. Anti-Poaching Measures: Poaching remains a severe threat to rhino populations, driven by the illegal trade in their horns. Advocate for and support stringent anti-poaching laws, as well as initiatives that combat the illegal wildlife trade. Don’t buy products that were sourced illegally, and don’t be afraid to ask store owners where their products came from.
4. Raise Awareness: Use World Rhino Day to raise awareness about the challenges rhinos face. Share what you know about habitat loss, the impact of poaching, and the critical need for conservation efforts.
