Plastic Free Ecochallenge 2022

Dates: 7/1/2022 - 7/31/2022
Times: All of July 2022

The Little Rock Sustainability Office and the Little Rock Zoo are participating in the Plastic Free Ecochallenge 2022, and would like you to join our team — Sustain Little Rock! The Plastic Free Ecochallenge is a month-long, global challenge to reduce and refuse single-use plastics. We invite you to join our initiative and explore easy actions to create plastic-free habits with us! The challenge runs from Friday, July 1 to Sunday, July 31 and is a fun and easy way to take action and make a difference!

The event will launch at The Green Corner Store this Friday, July 1, 2022, from 6p – 8pm, where you can explore many ways to live plastic free while supporting a locally-owned small business. The address is 1423 Main Street, Little Rock AR 72202.

Let’s TEAM UP and see how 31 days of ACTION can add up to a LIFETIME of positive change for you, our community, and the planet.

Another way we are helping Little Rock Conserve.Learn. and Care.

Week 1 Challenge: This week, the challenge is simple (but maybe harder than it sounds) – try to become aware of how much plastic you use on a daily basis, and identify areas where you could use less or switch to something reusable or sustainable.

Week 2 Challenge: Reduce Your Use of Plastic Bags  This can look like a lot of different things: bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, bringing produce bags instead of using plastic, using a dog scooper instead of bags, using reusable Tupperware or glass containers instead of Ziploc or sandwich bags, etc. Anytime you find yourself reaching for a plastic bag this week, ask yourself if there is another option. If there isn’t, can you reuse the bag?

Week 3 Challenge: Reduce your use of disposable products related to restaurants. If you eat in, bring your own container so that you won’t need plastic or Styrofoam for leftovers. If you choose take-out, ask them not to give you plastic straws or utensils, and use your own. If you go out for coffee, bring your own cup so that you won’t need a disposable one.

Week 4 Challenge: Join a clean-up! Whether this is an official outing with a group such as Keep Little Rock Beautiful, or whether you do an impromptu clean-up on your own street, grab a trash bag and pick up some litter. Every piece of trash we take off the streets of our communities and dispose of properly is one more piece of trash that will not end up in our waterways and oceans. You’ve already built good habits for yourself, and now you can help your neighborhood look better, too!
