National Reptile Awareness Day 2024

Dates: 10/19/2024 - 10/19/2024
Price: Included with Admission

Reptiles play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity by controlling pests, dispersing seeds, and supporting the health of ecosystems. Unfortunately, their biggest threat is habitat loss due to urbanization and deforestation, with many species also endangered by the illegal pet trade.

Join us at the Little Rock Zoo on October 19th to celebrate reptiles and meet some of our scaly residents!

Did you know that snakes use their tongues to smell? Or that most reptiles lay eggs? With over 10,000 species of reptiles, there's so much to discover!

Come learn fascinating facts like these and more during our reptile celebration. All activities are included with regular admission!

Schedule of Events:

10:00-12:00: Awareness table in the Reptile House, habitat exploration station, and hands-on activities

10:30: Komodo dragon feeding & keeper chat in the Reptile House

11:00-12:00: African spurred tortoise meet & greet at the exhibit near Cheetah Outpost (weather-dependent)

Here’s how we can contribute to Reptile Conservation:
  1. Shop Sustainably: Use your purchasing power to support responsible businesses that protect forests, improve the livelihoods of farmers and forest communities, promote human rights, and help humans and wildlife thrive. Look for products that are Rainforest Alliance or Fair Trade Certified to promote businesses who aim to reduce threats to many endangered species, including reptiles.
  2. Support Conservation Organizations: Contribute to reputable conservation organizations dedicated to reptile conservation. Your support can fund research, habitat protection, and community programs essential for the survival of reptiles. By visiting the Zoo, you’re already doing this! A portion of your admission and parking fee is dedicated to conservation groups that we are partnered with.
  3. Support Reputable Breeding Programs: Little Rock Zoo has partnered with Arkansas Game and Fish to breed and release collared lizards into glade ecosystems that have been restored in the lizards’ native ranges. Projects like this can help to return endangered or vulnerable species to an ecosystem. The Zoo also collaborates with other AZA partner programs like the Species Survival Plan and SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction).
  4. Responsible Pet Ownership: If you choose to have reptiles as pets, prioritize responsible ownership. Ensure that your pet reptile is acquired legally and support ethical breeders who prioritize the well-being of the animals. Visit TRAFFIC to learn more about the dangers of unsustainable pet trading.
