The
Little Rock Zoo is home to two Asian elephants,
Ellen and Mary. This has been Ellen's home since 1954. Mary
traveled through Europe with Circus Williams until she came
to the United States in 1968 with Gunther Gabel Williams.
She then traveled with Feld Entertainment until she retired
to the Center for Elephant Conservation in November of 2000.
In March 2001 she moved to the Little Rock
Zoo and became Ellen's companion. Our two 50 year old elephants
really enjoy each others company. Their day starts with a
warm bath followed by a breakfast of grain, fruit and vegetables.
After this the girls go for a mile long walk around the Zoo.
they graze at their favorite spot on the Zoo grounds for 30
to 40 minutes and them head back to their exhibit for a fifteen
minute training session. Throughout the day they eat hay,
bamboo and willow and on warm days bathe in their pool. Mary
is the water lover and can be seen in the pool three to four
times a day. Mary's favorite things are eating, swimming and
playing in the mud. Ellen loves her morning walk, learning
new things and visiting the rhinos and giraffes.
